First Ordinary Session of the Council of the UCLGA
July 2008 marks a very important date in the African local government calender. The 1st Ordinary Congress of the United Cities Local Governments of Africa(UCLGA) will be held in which, in line with the Constitution of the UCLGA, the 1st Ordinary Session of the Council of UCLGA, the highest decision organisation , will sit. Local Government Gender Action Plan Roll-Out Workshops

The aim of the workshop is to build gender analysis skills of local councillors and officials, and local government associations. The following categories of people from the respective local authorities are invited to attend the workshop: the Chairperson of council or other nominated Councillor, the CEO of council or other nominated official, Gender or HIV and AIDS focal person, Member of the community/ Civil society organisation.

ALAN Supports Members in the Development of Gender Action Plans

As known, the Association of Local Authorities (ALAN) and Gender Links (GL) in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare and the Ministry of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development, has developed and endorsed the ALAN Gender Strategy. This Strategy is geared toward mainstreaming gender conditions necessary to increase the representation of women in local government while increasing knowledge and awareness on mainstreaming gender activities at the local government level. The Strategy was developed with support from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DANIDA).

Further to this, ALAN is currently in the process of supporting all local to develop their respective Gender Action Plans. In order to assist the respective local authorities in drafting their specific gender action plans, An ALAN Gender Strategy has been drawn up. It can be adopted and implemented by all councils for future use.
